OLIVER LUTZ ON OXFORD ART JOURNAL
Jerome Zodo Contemporary is pleased to inform about the review by Stephanie Schwartz entitled Beyond Looking on Oxford Art Journal, Volume 33, Number 3, 2010.
The review focuses on the work of Oliver Lutz in the exhibition Exposed. Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera at Tate Modern, London (28 May – 3 October 2010).
Excerpt: "...In at least two works on view at Tate Modern – Nan Goldin’s The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1979 – 2008) and Oliver Lutz’s The Lynching of Leo Frank (2009) – the social mechanics of voyeurism were made present and palpable. Layered and looped, the slide show triangulates a nexus of stares between viewers, the photographer, and those on view. It socialises the voyeur. Lutz’s installation ups this ante. One of the few works in the exhibition employing a CCTV camera (the other is Thomas Demand’s Camera, 2007), Lutz negates the commodification of Frank’s lynching, its transformation into and circulation as a souvenir. Caught between the photograph and the CCTV camera’s loop, viewers of Lutz’s work are not allowed to simply look or to stare. They are projected into, made complicit with, with the transformation of the lynching into an image. Engaging the ways in which technologies of surveillance make viewers accountable, and not merely ciphers for looking, these works complicate the renewed plea for what Susan Sontag in her post - 9/11 study Regarding the Pain of Others called an ethics of looking. Speaking to Goldin’s Ballad, Baker explains, ‘The moral or ethical dimension of viewing the photographs is complicated, rather then resolved, by Goldin’s familiarity with and access to her subjects: they seem absolutely in some cases, to have forgotten and internalized the presence of the photographer. . .’ (210)."
